DaVinci Vs. Premiere Pro NAB Show 2024 Announcements

Whenever these kinds of announcements happen, it always takes me back to editing jobs that make me think, “If only I had this tool, it would have solved the issues I was having at the time.” But of course, that's how technology works. We keep working, and they keep innovating. I edit with Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. The choice of editing system depends on a few factors. If I know the edited job will go to a colorist who will be grading in DaVinci, I will edit in DaVinci Resolve to streamline the transfer from editing to color. Plus, I get to use the fancy Editor Keyboard ;) I usually edit in Premiere Pro if the client requests it, or if there's a specific feature in Premiere I know I'll want to use. The last time I decided to use Premiere was when I knew there would be a lot of interviews, and the transcription function would be invaluable in my workflow. Well, with Blackmagic's announcement at this year's NAB Show, I think deciding which editing system to use won’t be as easy, if it’s my choice.

What excites me most about Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve 19:

  • Text-based editing! This is what I was talking about with the transcription function that already exists in Premiere.

  • Audio ducking. This is also something that existed in Premiere, but I didn’t use it as much. However, I think I will now that it’s available in both editing systems.

  • The film look creator effect in the color page. I'm going to need to spend some time to get more familiar with this! The color page is one of those tools that seems to be bottomless in terms of what I can learn and do.

But what excites me even more is Generative AI in video editing! What?!! I’ve played around with Generative AI in Adobe’s Photoshop and Firefly, but now having it in Premiere Pro? Boom! I can see this is only the tip of the iceberg! You can see the demo here.

The gloves are off, and Adobe and Blackmagic Design have come to the party with new post-production announcements at the 2024 NAB Show that just concluded. I must say, I haven’t been this excited about new features in the two systems I use for editing in a while!

What edit system do you use and why? Comment below… I’m curious!
